Houdini dog...

This morning was a little rough for Penny. She managed to get her cast off, on the right leg, the one she had surgery on. We immediately called the vet at VCA Santa Cruz, and took her right in. How she got the cast off, we couldn't figure out, especially that she got it off so fast! She has her cone on at all times, but somehow managed to push the cast off with her hind legs. So we went to the vet, and they splinted the right and recasted the left, which was getting loose. She is also now on a tranquilizer as well as her pain meds, to help her stay calmer so that she doesn't keep trying to get her cast off. She had her kong filled, her toys and a bone, but it seemed that wasn't enough- she just wants to be done with this recuperating time! So now she is very mellow, but that is good- she can get the rest she needs now to get all better without getting agitated by her casts and trying to take them off.
Jared let her out and curled up on a blanket with her for an hour this afternoon, and that seems to be when she is the calmest and happiest. She licks you and fusses for a little bit, and then just calms down and snuggles up next to you. She is a lover, for sure.
The vet and nurses at VCA did a great job patching her up today, and we are hoping that we won't have to go back in until her scheduled appointment in two weeks (even though she loves everyone there so much!)

keep sharin' your love...

Thanks for all the wonderful comments from everyone, it really is amazing to see how much a community can come together and make great things happen. We will pass on all of your love and well wishes to Penny in the form of many kisses, cuddles and treats!

lovey dovey

Penny is showing herself to be a loving, sweet little girl. She wiggles when you walk by, and licks at her crate when you come in to see her. She already knows to sit when we tell her to, and we are slowly starting to work on "lay down" (but it's a little hard when you can't bend your front legs!) The potty training has been smooth, other then a few issues with riding in the car to the vet (its scary in the car!). She hasn't had an accident yet, and she gives a little whine when she needs us to come get her from the crate and carry her outside to do her thing. She is napping pretty much all day, but we cuddle her on the floor with a big blanket spread out for 10-15 minutes every few hours so at least while she can't be moving around she can still have some human interaction outside of her crate. She sleeps through the night too, which, for all of you with puppy experience, is a blessing.

A new home

Today was Penny's second day at her new home here with us. She is such a happy girl, you wouldn't even know she was injured by just looking at her big silly face. She would run and play if she could, but she has been prescribed 3 months of strict crate rest, which is really hard for an exuberant 5 month old pit bull! She came into our lives quite fast, needing medical attention and a foster home. The wonderful people at AFRP (Animal Friends Rescue Project) acted fast, and raised the money for her expensive surgery and other medical needs. We jumped up quickly to volunteer to take her for her fostering time, and now she is home-sweet-home with us, our 4 year old pit-bull Pty, and our 10 year old cat Cosmo. She is so joyful, even though she can hardly move, all she wants to do is lick your face and snuggle. She is going to make some family very happy!
I will be updating the blog with pictures and notes on Penny and her time with us, hoping to catch the eye of a willing and loving family who will adopt her and provide her with the fun and safe and happy home that she deserves.
